Hermosa Beach news briefs: youth music fundraiser, city attorney recognized

Youth music fundraiser

The Hermosa Beach Youth Music will host a fundraiser Wednesday, Dec. 19 at Uncorked Wine Shop, 302 Pier Avenue. The fundraiser, which includes a wine tasting and silent auction, will have two separate seatings: 6:30-8 p.m. and 8-9:30 p.m.

Several parents formed the non-profit over the summer in order to “keep the music playing” for Hermosa children amid budget cuts over the last several years that have eliminated music courses in the school curriculum. The Hermosa Beach Youth Music Band, which performed at last week’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony on the plaza, is an after-school tuition based program with 31 students that meets twice a week. Tickets are $20 and available at hbym.org.

Officials, residents recognized

Hermosa Beach City Attorney Michael Jenkins has been recognized as one of the top 25 municipal attorneys in California by the state’s leading legal publication, the Daily Journal. Jenkins was honored for the work he has done for Hermosa Beach as well as the education and training in the field of municipal law he provides at the University of Southern California, a city press release said. Jenkins has been the Hermosa Beach city attorney since 1995. He is also the city attorney for West Hollywood, Diamond Bar and Rolling Hills.

Also, The Hermosa Beach Rotary Club has selected Maureen Hunt as its Professional of the Year for 2012. Hunt, the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, was recognized for her leadership and high ethical standards in the business community.

In addition, two residents have been recognized in their respective industries.

Hermosa Beach resident Kelly Atkinson has received the Woman of the Year award from the Southern California Chapter of Women in Cable Telecommunications. Atkinson, who is married with two daughters, is the Chief Marketing Officer for Time Warner Cable. Atkinson was recognized for outstanding personal and professional achievement in the areas of Leadership, Education and Advocacy, a press release said.

Hermosa Beach financial planner Paul Baboolal has been recognized with membership into an exclusive 2012 Forum group for helping people achieve financial security. Baboolal is among the top five percent of Northwestern Mutual’s more than 6,000 financial representatives to receive this annual honor, a press release said.

Coastal Commission appointment?

Mayor Jeff Duclos has been nominated to serve on the California Coastal Commission for the South Coast seat, which represents L.A. and Orange County. The appointed seat is held by a locally elected official and will become vacant at the end of this year. Duclos, who has a strong environmental reputation, is among several candidates being considered.

Free holiday parking

The city is offering free holiday parking at the downtown silver meters through Dec. 25. The free three-hour parking does not include the parking structure or Lots A and B downtown where regular, full-time rates will be enforced.
