Hermosa Beach tennis court lights to be turned on again next week

After turning off the new tennis court lights behind the community center because of liability concerns, the city plans to make adjustments to the fixtures and reopen the courts for nighttime play next week, said Public Works Director Frank Senteno.

The new lights were installed over the summer. They were turned off Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. instead of 10 p.m., as is the normal schedule, after some tennis instructors and players complained that the new lights were dimmer in the center of the courts than the old lights.

Senteno said city staff will make adjustments to the fixtures in order to address lighting concerns. The public can play until 10 p.m. again, and tennis instructors will have to sign waivers of liability in order to conduct classes under the new lights, Senteno said.

The four lower public tennis courts were retrofitted with new energy-efficient lights. Since they were installed, tennis instructors and city officials have butted heads over the quality of the lighting.
