Hermosa Beach’s Mick McColgan busts last rivet

It’s last round for Mickey McColgan and closing time for the Four O’clock Club in Hermosa Beach. Four o’clock is when McColgan held court, first at his sons’ Pointe 705 restaurant and later at their Shark’s Cove bar.

McColgan passed away Monday at the age of 84. After a career as a high rise ironworker inPittsfield,Massachusetts, McColgan and his wife Angela moved to Hermosa to help their three sons Shane, Scott and Lance open the nightclub Pointe 705 and then seven other businesses, including Club Sushi and Ironworks Gym (now The Yard). The businesses’ masculine, sophisticated designs, which the sons credit to their dad, raised the bar for all of Hermosa’s downtown businesses.

McColgan’s hard work was legendary. During construction of Pointe 705 his sons were confronted with the problem of removing a large boulder from the middle of the lounge area.

“We got chains and a bobcat to pull the thing out the door, and then we realized it was too big to go through the door,” recalled son Scott.

As the sons stood around scratching their heads, Mickey picked up a 20 pound sledgehammer and reduced the big boulder to gravel.

John “Mickey” McColgan is survived by his wife of 59 years, daughter Shawn Barris and her husband David; sons Scott and his wife Melinda, Shane and Lance and his wife Sonja. McColgan had 13 grandchildren; Kimberly, Michael, Kelsey, Jamie, Logan, Shane, Luke, Sydney, Parker, Charlie, Jayden, Dani, and Kayie; and three great grandchildren Trevor, Peyton and (soon) Barris.

In lieu of flowers, contribution may be made to the charity of one’s choice. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on June 3 at Rice Chapel, 5310 Torrance Blvd., Torrance.  The memorial will be followed by a celebration of Mickey’s life at Shark’s Cove Sports Bar in Manhattan Beach. ER
