City officials beat out hundreds of municipal competitors to win a $350,000 state grant for signs, painted markings and sidewalk-building to foster safe routes to schools.
“We have been fighting so long to get a grant, and we got it today,” Councilman Michael DiVirgilio announced at the City Council’s regular meeting on Tuesday.
“I’m thrilled,” he said.
City Manager Steve Burrell and Public Works Department employees worked to secure the grant. Four hundred municipalities competed for 85 such grants. Burrell said it will be up to city officials to use the funds on a schedule that will be given to them. ER
