Cabbie assaulted

Two men dragged a cabbie out of his taxi shortly after 1:30 a.m. Saturday, in the 600 block of Fifth Street, assaulted him and took $30 to $50 cash, and tried but failed to steal his cell phone as well. The men fled the scene and the cabbie complained of pain but declined medical treatment.

Election forum

The Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau will sponsor a City Council candidates’ forum 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 at the Beach House, 1300 The Strand, in the Strand Café Room. Topics will include fiscal and budgetary policy, developing and retaining businesses in Hermosa, the business tax structure, city services for businesses and residents and long-term financial viability of the city.

The candidates for treasurer will be invited to give brief statements. For more see hbchamber.net.

Healthy donation

The city school district has received a $5,000 grant from the Murad Family Foundation, which will be used for the district’s Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds program.

Animal love

Veterinarian Alice Villalobos and the Peter Zippi Fund for Animals invite the public to their 34rd Anniversary Open House, Boutique and Adoption Day 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13 at VCA Coast Animal Hospital, 1560 Pacific Coast Highway.

Entrance is through the building’s side door. Visitors are asked to reserve the front parking lot for clinic patients, but people with difficulty walking can park in the small lot behind the clinic.

Silent auction and boutique items include weeklong stays in condos on Maui and Kona, and dining certificates for Hof’s House, Babouch, Java Man and Ocean Diner.

Other items include gift certificates for a facial or massage at Spectrum, one hypnosis session for behavior modification, pet photography sessions, and tickets to La Mirada Theatre, Museum of Tolerance, Aquarium of the Pacific, San Diego Zoo Aquarium of the Pacific, Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, Pacific Park, LegoLand, the Richard Nixon Library, Medieval Times, “one-of-a-kind specials from the entertainment industry,” gift baskets, animal gifts and jewelry.

At noon animal communicator Stephanie Brown will help visitors understand what some of the Fund cats need to be happy.

At 1:30 p.m. animal behavior specialist and veterinarian Karen Sueda will discuss common behavior problems of dogs and cats, behavior modification exercises, training, environmental issues, education and medication to address and prevent undesirable behavior.

Rather than using coercive techniques, the goal is to teach pets a new way to feel when they find themselves in challenging situations, and good behavior naturally follows.

Villalobos established the nonprofit Fund in 1977, in memory of Peter Zippi, a young man dedicated to the care of animals. The Fund helps place kittens and cats in loving homes, keeping the animals as long as it takes until the right match is made. The Fund has found homes for more than 14,000 animals, mostly cats and kittens.
