Soccer season kicks off with annual tournament

Entering their first tournament of the season, the girls soccer teams from Mira Costa and Redondo will compete in two pool-play games Saturday in the 34th annual South Holiday Girls Soccer Tournament.

Games will be played Friday and Saturday Dec. 9-10, Saturday, Dec. 17 and Monday, Dec. 19 at South and North High Schools.

Nineteen of the 24 teams featured in the tournament reached the playoff last season.

Playing on South’s Field 1, Mira Costa opens play in Pool A with an 8 a.m. game Saturday against Torrance followed by a 2 p.m. contest against Santa Ana Valley.

Redondo plays its Pool E games at North High beginning with the host Saxons at 8 a.m. The Sea Hawks turn right around and take on Simi Valley at 11 a.m.

Competing in Pool B are Bishop Montgomery, Granada Hills and Notre Dame. Pool C consists of South Torrance, Lancaster and Louisville. Pool D teams are Beverly Hills, Marymount and South Pasadena. Pool F features El Rancho, Santa Monica and Valley Christian. Pool G competitors are West Torrance, Downey and Yorba Linda and Pool H showcases Peninsula, Lakewood and Ramona Convent.

In non-league action, Mira Costa will host Torrance Monday, Dec. 12 at 3 p.m., play at South on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 3 p.m. and travel to Marina on Thursday, Dec. 15.

Redondo hosts Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks Thursday, Dec. 8 at 3 p.m. before playing at San Pedro Monday, Dec. 12 at 3 p.m. The Sea Hawks return home to take on South Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 3 p.m.
