Beach Cities athletes earn All-League honors

Mira Costa and Redondo were well represented when the All-Bay League teams were announced recently, including four athletes who earned special recognition for their achievements in the Fall 2011 season.

Girls Volleyball

Mira Costa captured its 27th consecutive league championship in 2011 and it was junior Corie Bain who set the table for her teammates – four who joined Bain as All-Bay League selections.

Bain was named MVP of the Bay League after recording 727 assists and 270 digs from the setter position while Redondo libero Tiffany Morales was selected as the league’s Most Outstanding Player. Both players were named to the All-CIF Southern Section Division 1AA team.

Other Mustangs honored were senior outside hitter and UCLA-bound Maddy Klineman and junior outside hitter Grayce Campbell, who were selected to the first team, and junior opposite hitter Lexi Millington and junior libero Katie Warshaw, who were named to the second team.

Morales, who will take her talents to the University of Michigan, capped off an illustrious prep career with a senior season that included 376 digs and 32 aces while leading the Sea Hawks to a second-place finish in the Bay League.

Redondo libero Tiffany Morales was named the Bay League’s Most Outstanding Player and was a member of the All-CIF Southern Section Division 1AA team.

Joining Morales on the All-Bay League first team were teammates junior outside hitters Skylar Dykstra and Sade Mendez. Junior middle blocker Hannah Mosebar was named to the second team.

Other local players earning All-CIF honors included South Torrance juniors Dessi Koleva (Pioneer MVP) and Tessa Fournier in Division 2AA and Chadwick juniors Sarah Lucenti and Abbe Holtze in Division 3AA. Chadwick’s Anita Drennan was named Coach of the Year in Division 3AA.

Boys Water Polo

Mira Costa’s Matt Thornton was one of four boys water polo players from the Bay League to be named to the All-CIF Southern Section Division 3 team.

Thornton, a senior defender, was voted Most Outstanding Player in the Bay League and joined league co-Most Valuable Players Charlie McBee and Erik Najarian, of Palos Verdes, and Andrew Martin, of Peninsula as All-CIF selections.

Mira Costa senior defender Matt Thornton was named Most Outstanding Player in the Bay League and a member of the All-CIF Southern Section Division 3 team.

Also making the All-Bay League first team were Josh Hutting and Justin Pratt of Mira Costa and Adam Rudow of Redondo.

The second team included Jimmy Bissell and Matt Grollman of Mira Costa and Skyler Ulrich of Redondo.

Football

Redondo senior linebacker Ryan Spiwak was named the Bay League Defensive Player of the Year after leading the Sea Hawks to a second-place finish in league competition.

Palos Verdes senior quarterback Zack Fixen was selected as the league’s Most Valuable Player and West junior quarterback Joey Notch was named Offensive Player of the Year.

Players named to the first team offense included lineman Cory Sanicky and running back Brandon Edmond of Mira Costa along with running back Trent Owens and wide receiver Hunter Bradshaw of Redondo.

Redondo linebacker Ryan Spiwak was selected the Bay League's Defensive Player of the Year.

First team defensive selections included lineman Quinn Goldman and defensive back Trey Tamura of Mira Costa and lineman Sam Ben-Amor, linebacker Brandon Kim and defensive back Erik Brown of Redondo.

The second team offense included linemen Ryan Daly and Richard Sparks along with wide receiver Raphael Lawson-Gayle of Mira Costa. Redondo players included running back Anthony Philyaw, quarterback Harrison Faecher and tight end Steven Vaughan.

Members of the second team defense included linebackers Josh Qerbash and Brett Gerten of Mira Costa.

All-CIF Southern Section teams are scheduled to be announced Jan. 18.
