
Mira Costa and Redondo Union will send their boys and girls teams to the CIF Southern Section Cross Country finals at Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday after impressive performances in the prelims.
Carlos Suarez (15:22), Will Tait (15:25) and Dustin Herold (15:29) finished in the third through fifth spots to lead Redondo’s boys team to the fastest Division 2 team time of the day.
Nicolas Weels (11th, 15:47), Waseem Radi (15th, 16:04), Tomohiro Yamaya (24th, 16:21) and Takehiro Yamaya (25th, 16:22) helped the Sea Hawks score 40 points, besting Canyon/Anaheim (52) and Moorpark (120).
Mira Costa’s boys placed fourth with 143 points. The Mustangs were led by JC Ohmstede (18th, 16:01). Also running for Mira Costa were Bram Osterhout (28th, 16:25), Chance Weston (32nd, 16:33), Brandon Shirazi (36th, 16:41), Ethan Williams (41st, 16:47), Alex Graves (75th, 17:30) and Matt O’Brien (93rd, 18:23)
Redondo’s girls team placed second in its Division 2 heat with 59 points, sandwiched by Serrano (51) and Woodbridge (82).
Amber Gore led the Sea Hawks with a third-place finish at 17:30. Taylor Beaudoin (7th, 18:03), Nicole Beaudoin (10th, 18:06), Anevay Hiehle (18th, 18:52), Peyton Bell (21st, 18:56), Thalia Silva (24th, 19:10) and Nicole Pederson (34thy, 19:32) helped Redondo advance.
Mira Costa’s Abby Hong continued having a stellar season, winning her heat with a time of 17:31 to lead the Mustangs to a second-place finish with 66 points. Arroyo Grande won the heat with 43 points and Redlands (102) finished third.
Emma Lautanen (7th, 18:05), Natasha Brunstein (9th, 18:23), Leora Tofler (19th, 19:01), Alexis Johnson (34th, 19:31), Kellie Jeong (38th, 19:55) and Baily Chen (44th, 20:05) helped Mira Costa advance to the finals.
Palos Verdes will send both of its teams to the CIF Division 3 finals, the South Torrance girls team will compete in Division 2 and both Chadwick teams advanced to the Division 5 finals.
Individual qualifiers included West Torrance’s Yousef Baddour (4th, 15:37) and South Torrance’s Nick Lofgren (2nd, 15:15) in Division 2 and Vistamar’s Lily Zino, who placed second in her Division 5 heat with a time of 19:14.
