Beach Cities Sports: Beach tennis, flag football, running, yoga and more

Fundraising: Redondo Union’s baseball program is hosting a blood drive for Cedars-Sinai in honor of Eric Grace, the father of two RUHS baseball players, who had a successful heart and kidney transplant in December. Held Saturday, Feb. 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the mobile unit will be located behind the tennis courts near the baseball field. Donors receive a choice of Baskin-Robbins ice cream coupon or limited edition t-shirt along with a complimentary hot dog at the snack bar. Beach Tennis: Manhattan Beach hosted its first ever ITF Beach Tennis Tournaments featuring players from around the country and abroad. Play Beach Tennis, a married couple who promotes the sport locally, hosted this 4-day event. Women’s Pro Winners were the New York team of Nadia Johnston and Nicole Melch, who beat Carolina Hannes (France) and Krishna DeMoura (Los Angeles) for the title. Men’s Pro Winners were Ali Colmenares (Miami) and Carlitos Vignon (Venezuela) who triumphed over Marty Salokas (Hermosa Beach) and Paulo Santos (Brazil).

 

Running: Redondo Union High School fared well Saturday with its boys (18:38.9) and girls (21:30.5) team each placing second at the Parlauf Relays. Held at West LA College, the 8,000-meter race features each team consisting of five athletes who run 200 meters eight times.

 

Registration is ongoing for the 41st Redondo Beach Super Bowl 10K/5K Run/Walk, to be held Sunday, Feb. 3, and hosted by the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau. The event includes a two-day Health and Fitness Expo, a Baby Buggy 10K, Kids Run, pre-race Costume Contest presented by the King Harbor Association and Michelob Ultra Post Race Hospitality Area. Participants receive a finisher medal and T-shirt with custom awards presented to the top three male and female finishers in each category. Entry fees are $40 (5K), $45 (10K) and $15 (Kids Run). Registration is open for the 16th Annual Village Runner St. Patrick’s Day 5K Run and Community Walk to be held at 8 a.m. Sunday, Mar. 17 in Redondo Beach’s Riviera Village. Following the 5K at 9:30 a.m. will be the kid’s Little Leprechaun Dash for Gold. All participants will receive a St. Patrick’s Day Run t-shirt. There will be chip timing, age division awards and cash prizes to the top three overall male and female runners in the 5K run. Entry fees are $35 for adults and $30 for kids (add $5 after Feb. 13). Flag Football: Prank Monkey will be holding its Sunday Flag Football season from Feb. 10 – Apr. 7 at 10th and the Strand in Hermosa Beach. The 4-on-4 Coed league costs $280 per team. Games are played from 2:30-4:30 p.m. For more information, contact prankmonkeysports.com.

 

Yoga: Yoga on the Octagon at the Redondo Beach Pier is free for all levels. Held Wednesdays 6 – 7 p.m., 500 Fisherman’s Wharf, Redondo Beach (west end of the pier behind Tony’s). Bring a yoga mat, towel and water. Redondopier.com.

Shade Hotel Redondo Beach offers free, all-level yoga on the Aquadeck, Mondays and Wednesdays 7:30-8:30 a.m., weather permitting. Attendees should wear comfortable clothing.
