Best Japanese Restaurant & Best Sushi: Sushi Duke

Server Kiyomi and owner-chef Sanjay. Photo
The little restaurant by the Redondo Pier picked up a triple win this year, for best sushi, best Japanese non-sushi, and for chef-owner Sanjee Duke as best sushi chef.Best of the Beach Chef Duke is certainly dedicated to his craft, making a daily trek to the fish market in search of the best ingredients, and he combines them with flair on a menu that is rich in daily specials. The ten chairs at his sushi bar are prized by those who enjoy innovative sushi; chef Sanjee can deliver traditional sushi if a customer requests it, but likes to dress up his fish with perfectly calibrated dashes of onion relish, ginger sauce, and other non-traditional ingredients. His Izakaya (cooked dishes) are mostly traditional and seasonal but can include French-influenced dishes like a seafood gratin. Three years after a move from Hermosa to Redondo that must have been difficult, Sanjee has expanded his base of customers and has won every honor our readers can give.

Sushi Duke: 320 S. Catalina, RB. 310-374-6929.

Non-sushi Runner-up: Benihana, 21327 Hawthorne Blvd., Torr. 310-316-7777.

Sushi Runner-up: Oki Doki Sushi, 442 PCH, HB. 310-798-8289.
