Lawndale settles for $2 million, pulls Galleria appeal

The City of Lawndale has withdrawn its appeal of the South Bay Galleria redevelopment project, in accordance with a settlement agreement with the Galleria’s parent company. The appeal was scheduled to be heard alongside two others at tonight’s Redondo Beach City Council meeting.

The Lawndale City Council approved the settlement at its Oct. 1 Lawndale City Council meeting. If the Galleria redevelopment project is approved by the Redondo Beach City Council, the Galleria will provide $2 million in roadway improvements for the major roads surrounding the Galleria, including Inglewood Boulevard, Hawthorne Boulevard, and Redondo Beach Boulevard. Lawndale will be advanced $350,000 to pay for design and planning costs for the roadway improvements.

“After numerous meetings, we came to a settlement agreement with the Galleria to provide benefits to community-oriented road improvements that are going to have to occur,” said Lawndale City Manager Steve Mandoki. “We’re pleased to be able to work things out with them, and that everyone recognized there are definitely impacts to the residents.”

Mandoki confirmed that the plan does not include improvements to nearby residential streets.

“That might be addressed in the future with traffic signs and turn restrictions,” Mandoki said.

The remaining appeals will be heard tonight at 6 p.m. at the Redondo Beach City Council meeting. Redondo Beach resident Doug Boswell and labor union UNITE HERE Local 11 are appealing the Redondo Beach Planning Commission’s decision to approve the project at its April 19 meeting.
