Leadership Hermosa to honor city’s firefighters

A few months ago, Councilmember Stacey Armato was speaking to the Leadership Hermosa Class of 2020 about some of the issues the city is addressing. She mentioned that the city’s fire station, now under construction, would reopen May 9.

The fire station news became a spark. Leadership Hermosa’s plans to dedicate this year’s class project to honoring the city’s firefighting legacy became official Tuesday night. When the station reopens, the entrance will be marked by new 30-foot Commercial Grade Titan Flagpoles with the flag of The United States and others of the local county and state, surrounded by bricks engraved with the history of firefighting in Hermosa Beach.

Rachel Hayes, one of the project managers, said when Armato made the announcement about the completion of the fire station, members of this year’s cohort were still deciding what to pursue for their class project. The May date is close to the traditional Leadership Hermosa completion dates. It seemed too good an overlap to ignore.

“Who doesn’t love recognizing our first responders?” said Jessica Accadmando, Hayes’ fellow project manager.

The paved display at the foot of the flag poll will cover the transition from Hermosa’s days of volunteer firefighters, to its own department, to its current chapter as part of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Research for the project is underway, and Hayes said that Easy Reader articles have been among the sources group members have used.

Leadership Hermosa plans to finance the project by giving businesses and community members the chance to buy personalized bricks that will also be included in installation. The 4- by-8-inch bricks can contain names or a brief dedication, and are priced at $100, to match Hermosa’s fire station number. To purchase a brick, go to leadershiphermosa.org/bricks.
