The racoon appeared to be dead.
Kevin Berry was checking out the aftermath of Friday morning’s storm when he saw something furry washed out from the drain off 28th Street.

“I walked down after the storm to check out the unearthed drain and saw what looked like a raccoon wrapped in seaweed,” said Berry, a Manhattan Beach resident. “I thought it was dead at first.”

The raccoon had apparently suffered the misfortune of getting caught in surge of stormwater. Berry pushed the raccoon out of the water and was surprised at what occurred next.

“I poked it a few times with my skateboard, it coughed a few times, then open its eyes,” he said. “I had to push it out of the surf, as the tide was washing up. I stayed with it for a bit and kept pushing it with my board to get it out of the surf and about 20 minutes later it just started walking back towards shore.”
As it regained its sense, the raccoon headed for higher ground.

Berry says he's not a trained lifeguard. "Well," he said. "I did save a raccoon."
