Basketball: For the first time in its 32 year history, Hermosa Beach Youth Basketball is offering a Summer League running from July 8 through Aug. 1. The world famous Harlem Globetrotters will be holding a Summer Skills Clinic June 27-29 at 24 Hour Fitness Carson Sport, 945 E. Dominguez St., Carson. Open to kids ages 6-12, clinics run from 9-11 a.m., 12:30-2:10 p.m. and 3:30-5:30 p.m. each day. Registration is $59 per session and space is limited. Baseball: Mustang Baseball Camps will be holding two summer sessions for players ages 6-14. Camps run from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. June 24-28 and July 29-Aug. 2 at MiraCostaHigh School. Fees are $200 for one session ($350 for both) and include t-shirt and snack. Mira Costa varsity coaches and players will instruct campers in hitting, fielding, pitching and base running. Running: This year’s tide conditions dictate the Manhattan Beach 5K will be held on Monday at 7:13 a.m. Run, walk or baby jog during the lowest tide of the season. Beachy T-shirts for all participants and Famous Cookie Award Medals will be presented. Kids races follow beginning at 8:10 a.m. with three distances available based on age. Top five receive awards and a chance to stand on the podium. Fees are $35 for the 5K; $25 for Kids races (add $5 for late registration). To register, visit mb5k.com.

 

Celebrate World Oceans Day on Saturday, June 8 with a 5K family beach run/walk beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Manhattan Beach Pier. The 1st Annual Roundhouse World Oceans Day Fundraiser benefits the Roundhouse Aquarium. Entry fee of $35/person includes T-shirt, water, refreshments, electronic timing and post-run raffle. Registration is open for the 20th annual Village Runner 4th of July 5K Run/Community Walk, and Firecracker 5K in Redondo Beach. Early registration prices for adults and kids running the 5K is $30 (add $5 after June 27). New sponsors Land Rover South Bay, RemedyPharm and Providence Little Company of Mary will assist in the festivities which include a two-day Expo, costume contest and parade of the previous men’s and women’s winners. The race, which draws over 4,000 runners and walkers, begins on Thursday, July 4 at 8 a.m., starting and finishing at Riviera Village. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Redondo Beach Firefighters Association and local area schools. Leading up to the race, weekly training runs and running socials will be held. All participants will receive a 4th of July Run T-shirt. There will be chip timing, age division awards and cash prizes to the top three overall male and female runners in the 5K run. Football: A Co-ed Flag Football on the Beach League returns to Hermosa Beach on Thursday nights beginning at 6:30 p.m. on June 20 at 10th Street and The Strand. Games are played with two 20-minute halves, alternating guy and girl quarterbacks. Registration offered as a team only and must be made at the Hermosa Beach Community Center, 710 Pier Ave. prior to the first day of the league. Cost is $265 per team with a 10-person roster limit for the seven-week season followed by two weeks of playoffs. Volleyball: The California Beach Volleyball Association will be hosting tournaments at the Hermosa Beach Pier this weekend. On Saturday, Men’s Unrated, Open and Women’s Open divisions will take place. Sunday’s competition includes Men’s B, Women’s A and Coed A and AAA divisions. Action begins at 9 a.m. each day. The Amateur Athletic Union’s (AAU) beach volleyball Southern Pacific Championships will be held Sunday, June 2 at the Hermosa Beach Pier. Competition features boys 14U/12U/10U and girls 18U/16U/12U/10U divisions. On Saturday, June 15 the Southern Pacific Beach Volleyball Circuit hosts the Tachikara Classic at DockweilerStateBeach in Playa Del Rey. Competition showcases girls 18U/16U/14U/12U/10U divisions. Competition for both tournaments begins at 9 a.m. Open to AAU members, the cost of each tournament is $63.99 per player. We Are Volleyball Elite (WAVE) will be holding indoor volleyball maintenance sessions from 7-9 p.m. on eight Wednesdays beginning July 10 at Adventure Plex, 1701 Marine Ave., Manhattan Beach. Coaches include Jose Loiola (King of the Beach, two-time Manhattan Beach Open winner), Marcio Sicoli (Coach of Olympic gold medalists Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May Treanor), Sydney Donahue (Mira Costa alum & Arizona State all-time leader in digs) and Lars Hazen (Mira Costa alum with 24 years coaching volleyball). Triathlon: Registration is ongoing for the 9th annual Redondo Beach Triathlon sponsored by California Health Plans. The event begins at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, June 9 at the Veteran’s Park/Pier area in Redondo Beach. All of the proceeds go to Cheer for Children, a non-profit organization that gives seasonal parties and raises money for acutely ill children at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. The USAT sanctioned scenic course event consists of a 1/2-mile swim, 6-mile bike, and 2-mile run. Space is limited to the first 600 entries. A non-competitive mini-sprint (half the distances) is also available. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each division and the top two relay teams. Sprint fees are $75 (ages 13-19 and 65 and older), $85 (ages 20-64), $115 (relay). Mini-sprint fees are $65 and $95 for the relay. Add $5 after May 31. Aquatics: Registration is now open for the 2013 Dwight Crum Pier to Pier Swim. The swim will be held on Sunday, Aug. 4. Registration for the swim may be done online at surffestival.org or through the Active.com link. Cycling: The South Bay Wheelmen hosts a group ride on the first Saturday of every month. Cyclists meet in the parking lot of the Catalina Coffee Company, 126 N. Catalina Ave, Redondo Beach at 9 a.m. The moderately-paced ride is 30-40 miles with some climbing and regroups at several points so no one gets left behind. The Wheelmen also hosts the Baxter Time Trial Series of bicycle races that began this week and will continue each Sunday through Sept. 29 on a course in Carson. Men and women divisions compete in several age groups where racers are awarded points for placing and winners are announced at the end of the series. Rugby: Open to boys and girls ages 12-18, the Palos Verdes Rugby Summer Camp will be held Mon.-Fri. July 22-Aug. 2 from 2-5:30 p.m. each day at Malaga Cove. The first week will include an introduction to rugby while the second week will focus on advanced skills.
