After four years of consistent racing, the Hermosa Beach-based McCarthy Racing Team had high expectations when it entered The Mint 400 outside of Las Vegas last month. The Mint 400 is one of the premier events in The Best In The Desert Racing Series. After resolving a fuel injector problem during a pre race test drive, the team was confident their 1500 class 1 (unlimited) buggy was ready for a successful run. But less than a dozen miles from the start, a valve spring blowout put the team  out of the race. Despite the disappointment, McCarthy said he is looking forward to the upcoming Silver State 300 in Nevada during the first week of May. The team also plans to compete in this year’s Best in the Desert’s Baja 500, Vegas to Reno and The Baja 1000 races.
