Mira Costa boys water polo team reaches finals after tough win

Mira Costa’s boys water polo team will play for the CIF Southern Section Division 2 championship after posting a comeback win against Dana Hills.

Mira Costa (21-6) takes on Foothill (20-10) at 12 p.m. at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine. The Mustangs defeated the visiting Knights 8-5 on Sept 28.

Coach Jon Reichardt’s Mustang squad will play in the finals for the first time since 2013 when it defeated Santiago 6-5.

Mira Costa, who was shutout in the third quarter against Dana Hills, rebounded in the final frame with goals by Clayton Allen, Troy Gleason and A.J. Slater.

With four minutes remaining, Allen evened the score at 6-6 before Gleason scored on a penalty shot with 3:04 left to give the Mustangs the lead.

Foothill defeated Corona del Mar 12-10 to advance to the championship match.
