The Manhattan Beach Coordinating Council gave $24,000 in scholarships to six Mira Costa High School graduating seniors. The students honored were Austin Ahn, Julia Bakerink, Ella Banach, Ryan Daly, Austin Phillips, and Elias Rivas.
“They all have bright futures ahead of themselves, and we are proud to be able to help fund their college educations,” said Jill Brunkhardt, the council’s president.
Ahn plans to pursue a career in medicine or architecture. Bakerink will pursue broadcast journalism. She’s won three major national competitions with stories she produced for Mira Costa’s video production program. Banach is hoping to become a registered nurse and is particularly interested in becoming a pediatric nurse. Daly received the Phyllis Cohen Edwards Memorial Scholarship. His battle with leukemia at age 4 inspired his plans to study medicine. Phillips plans to major in economics, study abroad and intern for a government agency. Elias Rivas is receiving the Manhattan Beach Police Officers’ Association Officer Martin Ganz Memorial Scholarship. He eventually plans to attend law school and seek work in the public sector.
