Mira Costa (17-1-3) will host second-seeded Sunny Hills (21-1-4) in the finals on Saturday.

Watkins scored a goal and earned an assist on a goal by Rachel Rosen to give the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage in the first 15 minutes of the game. Watkins added a second goal later in the half.

Girls Water Polo

Mira Costa lost a heartbreaker in the Division 3 girls water polo final Saturday when Oaks Christian scored a goal in sudden death to claim a 9-8 victory at the William Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine.

Sophomore Leigh Lyter scored a game-high five goals for Mira Costa (23-10) and sophomore utility player Elizabeth Terry had two.

Mira Costa, which is expected to move up a division or two, will lose only three seniors with 16 players returning.

The Mustangs reached the finals after beating Santiago 9-8. Redondo (21-6) fell in the semifinal losing to Oaks Christian 7-6 despite Kathy Wrightsman’s 12 saves and Kennedy East’s two-goal performance.
