
Hundreds of local and out-of-area high school athletes will converge in Waller Stadium on the campus of Mira Costa High School on Saturday, Mar. 26 when the school’s track and field program hosts the 22nd edition of the Mustang Relays.
Sponsored by Skechers Performance Division, the event begins at 9 a.m. with the Bob Fish girls and boys 1600 meter runs.
Relay events include the 4×100, 4×400, 4×800, 41600 and distance medley races. Other running events include the 100, girls 100 hurdles, boys 110 hurdles and boys and girls 300 hurdles.
At approximately 12:30 p.m., the popular Coaches 4×100 relay will take place.
Field events include the shot put, discus, high jump, long jump, triple jump and pole vault.
Medals will be awarded to the top three relay teams and top five finishers in field, hurdle and individual events..
Defending champions include Redondo pole vaulters Tate Curran and Kaitlin Heri along with Mira Costa’s Shante Robinson (300 hurdles).
Mira Costa’s Melia Chittenden won the 2015 girls 1600 but will join other distance runners at the adidas Distance Meet of Champions at Azusa PAcific University.
Mira Costa competed in the California relays held at Cerritos College last weekend emerging with two winners. The Mustang girls relay team won the 4×100 title with a time of 48.18 and Shante Robinson took top honors in the 100 hurdles with a mark of 14.01.
Redondo is coming off a fine performance at the Triton Invitational held last Saturday at San Clemente High School.
Pole vaulter Tate Curran set a new personal best by eight inches clearing the bar at 16 feet, 4 inches. The mark is the third best in the state and only four inches shy of the top mark held by Jacob Bowler of Del Oro in the CIF-San Joaquin Section.
Jerone Jackson won the boys 400 with a time of 50.45.
In girls competition, Kaitlin Heri won the pole vault with a mark of 12-6. Her personal best of 12-8 set in February at the Zamperini Relays in Torrance is fourth best in the state this season.
Redondo’s 4×100 relay team also took top honors in San Clemente with a time of 49.76, Akaylah Hill was a two-time winner capturing the long jump (16-06.5) and triple jump (36-10) and Kennedy Williams won the 200 (26.22).
