Up to 20 schools will send their track & field teams to Waller Stadium when Mira Costa hosts the annual Mustang Relays beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Along with relay races and field events, there will be Invitational 1600-meter and 100-meter competition, Open girls 100 hurdles, boys 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles (all divisions).

Competition will be tight in the girls hurdle events where Mira Costa’s Shante Robinson will attempt to overtake Redondo’s Kristen Hamlin after the Bay League rivals finished in the top two spots last year in both the 100 and 300 hurdles.

The popular Coaches 4×100 Relay is always an exciting event that draws loud support from teammates and fans from each school.

Entry fees are $7 for adults; $5 for students with IDs and children under 12.

Mira Costa is coming off an impressive showing at the 12th Annual California Relays held at Cerritos College last Friday and Saturday.

Mira Costa’s girls team scored 64 points to win the Large School competition beating Carondelet (46) and Redlands (38).

The Mustang’s 4×1600 relay team of Nathasha Brunstein, Elizabeth Chittenden, Jessica Gregson-Williams and Leora Tofler finished first with a time of 21:24.52.

Mira Costa’s 4×400 (3:58.76) and 4×800 (9:52.30) relay teams turned in second-place performances and its 4×100 (48.70) team placed third.

Shante Robinson won the girls 300 hurdles (43.17) and placed third in the 100 hurdles invitational (14.72).

Mira Costa also had strong performances by Jordyn Dorsey (2nd, 100, 12.69), Claire Barone (2nd, pole vault. 9-00) and Myra Erlington (3rd, triple jump, 34-06.5).

Peninsula had three winners with Tunika Onnekikami capturing the 400 (56.66), Jacqueline Ahrens placing first in the pole vault (9-06) and Audrey Pillsbury tossing the discus 123-03 feet. Onnekikami also placed second in the 200 (25.19).

South Torrance’s Karin Saski placed third in the pole vault at 8-06.

In the Small School category, Palos Verdes’ girls scored 40 points to finish third behind Rock Canyon (64) and Gahr (52).

Palos Verdes captured the 4×800 (10:18.48) and 4×1600 (22:43.11) races and had second-place finishes by Sabrina Li in the 100 hurdles (17.07) and 300 hurdles (49.80) along with Dorie Weller in the shot put (29-06). Weller also placed third in the discus (71-07).

El Segundo had first-place finishes by its 4×400 relay team (4:12.06), Darcie Hill in the 100 hurdles (15.87) and Kendall Brooks in the triple jump (32-10).

Brooks also finished second in the long jump (16-03.5) as did the Eagle’s 4×200 team (1:55.66).

Placing third were Genevieve Johnson (300 hurdles, 52.79) and Aliya Edwards (pole vault, 7-06).

In boys competition, Mira Costa was led by Javan Nuzzolo (2nd, pole vault, 13-09) and its 4×800 relay team (8:27.79).

Peninsula’s Jacob Funes won the triple jump (46-00) while teammate Luke Wieten took third in the pole vault (13-09).

Competing in the Small Schools division, Palos Verdes won the 4×800 (8:01.17) and Armon Clayborn captured the 100 hurdles (15.83). Clayborn also finished second in the 300 hurdles (42.39) and the Panther’s 4×1600 team placed third (19:27.08).

El Segundo’s Kristian Thomas won the triple jump (45-03.5) and Andrew Henseler was third in the pole vault (10-06).
