
Fifth-seeded Mira Costa dominated host Westlake Thursday, but came up short in its quarterfinal game of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 Championships.
Despite controlling the first half, the Bay League champion Mustangs failed to convert on their opportunities and fourth-seeded Westlake made the most of its chances, scoring the game’s lone goal in the 44th minute.
Mira Costa goalkeeper Nonie Frishette made three saves, but the one shot that got away was the difference maker in the game.
Coach Patty Perkinson’s Mustangs had their best playoff run in seven seasons and finished with an impressive 17-3-4 record.
Westlake (18-2-1) advances to play at top-seeded Sunny Hills (23-1-5) in the semifinals on Tuesday.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 8 Great Oak continued its momentum after eliminating Redondo 1-0 Tuesday in a marathon that took 42 penalty kicks to decide. Great Oak (18-2-3) upset second-seeded Chino Hills (19-4-4) 3-2 and will host No. 3 Long Beach Wilson (19-4-3) in the semifinals.
In Division 4, top-seeded South Torrance (26-0-6) remained unbeaten with a 5-0 win over visiting Artesia. The Spartans will travel to No. 4 Quartz Hill (22-2-2) for a semifinal contest on Tuesday. The winner will face the La- Mirada-Downey winner in the finals on either March 1 or 2.
Second-seeded Downey (20-3-2) eliminated No. 7 Torrance 1-0 on Thursday.
