Police recognize good drivers when that’s what data shows

Just 6.5 percent of 13,366 drivers exceeded the 25 mph speed limit on the 400 block of Pearl Street between Aug. 9 through 16, according to Redondo Beach Police Captain Jeff Mendence.

The data was gathered by a police trailer radar, which displays the speeds of oncoming cars.

The average, according to Captain Mendence, was 22.6 mph.

The data is compiled weekly, but not used to track down speeders.

“We thought, why aren’t we sharing this information better?” Mendence said. That’s a lot of people who are driving safely. “I think it’s as important to recognize the good things people do.”

In June, the trailer was parked on Manhattan Beach Boulevard, then moved to 190th Street, then to Pearl Avenue and now Aviation Boulevard.

“If what we find shows a need for more enforcement, then we’ll do that,” said Mendence . “If it doesn’t, congratulations everyone for doing a good job, and we’ll move onto the next location.”

The police department has a list of six more spots to go to, some requested by residents..

The city has had one radar trailer since 2019, but hopes to fund more through grants.
