An unplanned power outage affected a wide swath of Hermosa Beach Monday morning.

The outage began at 7:27 a.m., according to Southern California Edison. As of 9:45 a.m., 2896 customers were without power.

The outage is believed to have started as a result of a blown transformer near the intersection of 28th Street and Hermosa Avenue, said Capt. James Crawford of the Hermosa Beach Police Department. A guy-wire used to support a power line had rusted through and fell against the power line, causing the overload.

Outages spread along Hermosa Avenue into the downtown area and Pier Plaza, Crawford said. Homes along 8th Street and the city yard on 6th Street were also affected.

No injuries have been reported due to the outage, Crawford said.

Edison expects power to be restored by 11:30 a.m.ER
