Aquatics: Mira Costa’s aquatics program will be hosting a Junior Lifeguard Conditioning class in preparation for the Jr. Lifeguard Swim Test. Cycling: The Beach Cities Cycling Club, Beach Cities Health & Fitness Center and South Bay Bicycling Coalition have joined together to offer a free 10-week A-to-Z Safe Cycling course designed for beginners to low-intermediate cyclists. The highly structured cycling course will teach the basics to highly skilled techniques, how to ride and maintain your bike, encourage you to develop and practice safe cycling skills, and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Course instructors are USA Cycling Coaches and League Cycling Instructors. Classes meet from 9-10 a.m. each Sunday starting April 15 with an optional 1-2 hour ride following the session. Participants must be at least 18 years old, have access to a safe and dependable bike (suitable for the road with multiple gears), a helmet and be a BCC Club member ($25.00 a year). All training sessions will be held in the Beach Cities area and class size is limited to the first 20 people to sign up. The Los Angeles Velodrome Racing Association (LAVRA) has announced its 2012 race season to be held at the Velo Sports Center, 18400 Avalon Blvd., Carson. Located at the Home Depot Center, the facility provides a safe and healthy environment to ride and is the only world class indoor velodrome in North America hosting athletes from all over the world. The Baxter Time Trial Series of bicycle races has started, and will continue each Sunday through Sept. 30 on a course in Carson, near Torrance. Often called the “race of truth,” a time trial is a race against the clock. There are men’s and women’s categories for several different age groups. Racers are awarded points for placing and winners are announced at the end of the series. The Baxter Series is sponsored by the South Bay Wheelmen, a club for racers, aspiring racers, and those who just love to ride their bike. Participants in the Baxter races must be a club member and have a US Cycling Federation license, but membership and a one-day USCF license can both be obtained at the race. The third annual Dig 4 Jimmy Surf N Turf event will be held Sunday, May 6 at 8 a.m. at the Manhattan Beach Pier. The unique event combines the best of beach life with participants surfing one scoring wave before competing in a sand volleyball tournament. Proceeds benefit Dig 4 Kids, an after school program committed to provide youth in low-income communities with increased opportunities for academic and athletic achievement, and the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation which supports the healing of mental and physical illness through surfing and ocean-related activities. Dig 4 Kids founder Eric Fonoimoana and the late Jimmy Miller grew up together surfing and playing volleyball, both playing on one of the greatest Mira Costa High School volleyball teams, and put their dedication and efforts into the sports they love.
Running: Registration is open for the 6th edition of the Hermosa Beach 5000 and City Walk to be held Saturday, April 21. The event includes separate 5K races for men and women along with a Stroller/Baby Buggy division and a Skateboard 5K (helmets required) and running races for kids 12 and under. The Stroller/Baby Buggy event begins at 7:30 a.m. immediately followed by the Kids Skateboard 5K. Men begin the 5K run at 8 a.m. followed by the women and the City Walk at 8:45 a.m. Kid’s Races start at 9:50. The fast, cloverleaf course features Pier Plaza, The Strand and the Hermosa Beach Pier. Awards are given to the top five in all 50 age divisions and all participants receive the 6th edition T-Shirt and “Livestrong” type bracelet. Participant medals are given to all kids. Skateboarding: Skatepark PV, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)3 on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, has teamed up with Beachsports and the City of Rolling Hills Estates to host the 2nd Annual SK8 the Hill Event on Saturday, May 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the basketball court of Ernie Howlett Park, 25851 Hawthorne Boulevard, Rolling Hills Estates, just north of PV Dr. North. The free event includes ramps, rails and grind boxes to skate on. Food trucks will be there as well as local teams.
