Witzansky proposes $101 million city budget

If any Sugar Ray lyrics appear in the 2023 proposed Redondo Beach city budget it is because City Manager Mike Witzansky finished it over BeachLife weekend and could hear the goings-on from his window.

He presented the final $101 million tally May 17 to the city council.

“It is a voluminous document,” he said.

The council now refers to it as it works to craft a budget by the June 30 state deadline.

Along with larger items such as $4.2 million for seismic retrofitting of the Redondo Beach Pier, the proposal includes 83 “decision packages,” representing another $4.2 million for things such as whether to increase tree planting in the city from 100 new trees per year to 350 ($145,000).

The city council meets again June 7.

Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans Park

A public Memorial Day ceremony will be held at Veterans Park at 1 p.m. May 30.

Keynote speaker is Coast Guard Captain Rebecca E. Ore, who commands the Sector of Los Angeles / Long Beach at U.S. Coast Guard Base Terminal Island, San Pedro.

In attendance will be Congressman Ted Lieu, State assemblyman Al Muratsuchi, Redondo Beach Mayor Bill Brand and military dignitaries.

Music is provided by the Redondo Union High School wind ensemble, directed by Ray Vizcarra.

Following the event, Redondo Elks Lodge No. 1378 hosts a barbecue in their parking lot – free for all veterans and members of the military, police and firefighters. A $5 donation is asked from all others.

RUHS football to hold pancake breakfast, flag-football tournament

The Redondo Union High School football program will host a pancake breakfast and co-ed flag-football tournament Saturday, June 4.

Running from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Sea Hawk Stadium, the event benefits RUHS boys football, girls flag football and RUHS cheerleaders.

Tickets are $10 per person. Food includes pancakes, eggs, sausage and milk or orange juice. Kids age 3 and under are free.

“We are excited about the new flag football tournament, and are looking forward to an event that everyone in the community can enjoy,” said new RUHS Head Coach Keith Ellison.

Funds for the football team are slated to help pay for new uniforms.

Tickets are available from any football player, girls flag football player or cheerleader, or at the gate.ER
