Redondo celebrates 100 years of Sea Hawk baseball
Redondo Union High School kicks off its season-long celebration of 100 Years of Redondo Baseball with its annual Alumni Game at noon on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Memorial Field.
After the alumni shake off the rust with live batting practice at 10:15 a.m., the 2015 varsity squad will battle the former Sea Hawks in a grudge match.
Redondo head coach Jeff Baumback expects approximately 30 alumni players to be in attendance including assistant coaches and former Sea Hawk players Cole Butler (’05), Jeff Stimpson (’03) and Todd Christensen (’07).
Other alumni players scheduled to participate include: David Taylor (’68), Bob Martin (’71), Zack Fraser (’02), Ben Woodruff (’07), Bobby Martin (’08), Steve Moon (’08), Sam Andrews (’09), Peter Ives (’09), Nick Ridio (’10) and Nycholas Bongiovanni (’11).
Redondo’s varsity team has high hopes for the season returning seven starters from last year’s squad that reached the CIF Southern Section Division 3 semifinals.
Shortstop Duncan McKinnon, outfielder Jason Clebowicz, pitcher/utility player Jason Dicochea, third baseman Brady Dorn, second baseman Cole Henderson, pitcher/outfielder Cooper Gallion and first baseman/pitcher Danny Zimmerman will lead the Sea Hawks this season.
“All returning starters are players to watch and the expectation of this group is high,” Baumback said. “Duncan McKinnon has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Purdue University next year and Brady Dorn is a three-year starter at third base for us. Several of these other guys will also play college baseball.”
Key newcomers who will compete to start are catcher Marco Valenzuela, pitcher Connor Riley and pitcher/first baseman Sean Reynolds.
“This team should compete for a Bay League Championship,” Baumback added. “I expect us to play tough and compete against every team on our schedule.”
Redondo opens the regular season hosting Bishop Montgomery in a 6 p.m. game on Monday, Mar. 2. ER
