Dedication set for new fire equipment

The Redondo Beach Fire Department invites the public to its traditional dedication ceremony for the City’s newest fire engine and ladder truck on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 10 a.m., at Fire Station 1, 401 S. Broadway.

This ceremony, known as “wet down and housing” dates back to the era of horse-drawn steamers and hand pumps. Each steamer, returning back to the station from a fire, would have its horse team separated from the engine, and each horse would be washed down before the steamer would be pushed by hand back into its bay by the firefighters.

There will be a brief public dedication before all children in attendance will be asked to help wash down the fire engine and ladder truck. After the wash is complete, the adult attendees and firefighters will perform the ceremonial housing of the new fire engine and ladder truck.

Refreshments will be served immediately following. Tours of the new engine and ladder truck and Fire Station #1 will be available.

General Plan community meeting Saturday

The Redondo Beach General Plan Advisory Committee is hosting a community meeting at the Perry Park Teen Center, 2301 Grant Ave., on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The public is invited to learn more about the update to the General Plan, Redondo’s foundational land-use document. Attendees may participate in a land use survey, provide public comment, speak one-on-one with project team members and discuss ideas with community members.

A presentation will run from 10 to 10:30 a.m., and an open house will follow, for attendees to stop in at their convenience.

Refreshments will be provided.
