KHYC hosts youth regatta

King Harbor Yacht Club hosted 58 young sailors on Saturday for the Ken Hoover Memorial Regatta, the final event in the Carrie Series of Optimist youth sailing regattas.

Optimists are eight-foot, single-sail race boats, piloted by single youth racers, ages 8 to 15. While rookie sailors kept to a course that stayed inside King Harbor, the “Champion Fleet” racers sailed the open ocean.

Katherine Doble, from California Yacht Club, won the Ken Hoover Memorial Trophy, as well as the Carrie Series overall regional championship. Blake Behrens, of Santa Barbara Yacht Club, took second place in both the local regatta and in the regional championship.

“Every kid can get involved in sailing, and almost all start with taking a summer sailing program like we have at the Foundation,” said King Harbor Youth Foundation head coach Abby Featherstone. “We sail out of the King Harbor Yacht Club facilities, but kids and their families do not need to be members to enjoy access to summer sailing or the KHYF Opti Race Team.”

Fire Service Day

The Redondo Beach Fire Department is holding its annual Fire Service Day Open House on May 12, at Fire Stations 1 and 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fire Service Day is RBFD’s outreach day, allowing residents to visit fire stations and get to know the people and equipment that fire personnel use on the job. RBFD firefighters will be available throughout the day to demonstrate equipment, including protective turnout equipment and fire engines.

Food and refreshments will be served. Fire Station 1 is located at 401 S. Broadway; Fire Station 2 is located at 2400 Grant Ave. For more information, visit redondo.org/fire, or call 310-318-0663.

Spaghetti Dinner

That evening, across the street from Fire Station 1, the Woman’s Club of Redondo Beach will host the 10th Annual Community Spaghetti Dinner. As always, Redondo Beach Fire Department personnel will be both cooking and serving food.

Guests can expect live music, auctions, and a bake sale. Tickets are $15 and are available for purchase at the door. Proceeds will go to charity. The Woman’s Club of Redondo Beach is at 400 S. Broadway. For more information, visit wcrbinfo.com.
