It was a gloomy Saturday, but the weather didn’t keep hordes of people away from the Redondo Beach Pier last weekend, the energy of a live DJ propelling them as they browsed the chalked designs splashed over the sidewalks. It was the 11th annual Chalk Art Festival, hosted by the Redondo Beach Pier Association — an association dedicated to providing free community events throughout the year at the pier.

The festival drew artists — professionals, amateurs, and first-timers — from all over the area, and lasted from 1 p.m. to 4  p.m. Judges later determined the winners: Notsu, whose image is above, won the professionals category; Penny Richards in the 18+ category; the Bolanos in the family category; Cynthia Helm beat her 14- to 17-year-old competition; Sara Clark her 9- to 13-year-old competition; Petra Horn her five- to eight-year-old competition; and Gavin Trager won in the under-four category.
