The Redondo Beach Police Department was awarded a $90,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for a year-long program aimed at preventing deaths and injuries on the roadways through special enforcement and public awareness. A release from the RBPD said that the department will use the funding for both enforcement and education. The department aims to reduce the number of people killed and injured in traffic collisions by focusing on DUI saturation patrols, motorcycle enforcement, distracted driving enforcement, speed, red light and sign enforcement and warrant service operations targeting DUI offenders. They also hope to compile a DUI “hot sheet” to identify the worst DUI offenders and employ stakeout operations to observe the DUI offenders with suspended or revoked licenses.

“Despite the recent increases, California’s roadways are still very much safer than they were before 2006,” said OTS Director Christopher J. Murphy in the RBPD press release. “The Redondo Beach Police Department will be keeping the pressure on through enforcement and public awareness so that we can continue saving lives and reach the vision we all share.”

According to the RBPD, DUI deaths are nearly 30 percent of traffic fatalities and distracted driving and drug-impaired driving deaths are on the rise.
