Redondo’s girls volleyball team suffered only its fourth loss of the season, but two of them came at the hands of top-seeded Mater Dei, the final one ending the Sea Hawks season in the semifinals of the CIF-SoCal regional Open Division.

Redondo (35-4), who came off an 11-day period of not playing a match to easily sweep Cathedral Catholic of San Diego in the opening round, continued its fine play winning the first set 25-19 against Mater Dei (41-2).

But Mater Dei, the top-ranked team in the state and No. 3 in the country, shook off the set back winning the finals three sets 25-23, 25-15, 25-19.

The Monarchs took on Marymount (33-9) in the regional finals with the winner advancing to Saturday’s State Championship match with either Central (Fresno) or Buchanan (Clovis).

Redondo rallied to take a 23-22 lead in the second set, but Mater Dei rallied with three points to claim the victory.

Redondo was led by Kami Miner’s 10 kills and Jasmine Davis and Jylen Whitten, each who had nine kills.

Jody Smith contributed with seven blocks and three kills and libero Nalani Iosia posted 14 digs and nine assists.
