With a strong nucleus returning from last season’s Bay League championship squad, Redondo’s softball team kicks off its 2015 campaign hosting its annual Varsity Tournament with pool play action taking place on Saturday.

Redondo opens the tournament with back-to-back Pool A games against Diamond Bar at 9 a.m. and South Torrance at 11 a.m.

Competing in Pool B will be Mayfair, West and San Pedro. Pool C teams include Warren, Bishop Montgomery and Harbor Teacher.

Teams finishing in third place in each pool compete in the Bronze Division on Tuesday. Silver Division games are scheduled for Thursday, Mar. 5 and Gold Division competition will be held on Friday, Mar. 6.

Redondo lost only four players to graduation and returns one of the area’s top pitchers with southpaw hurler Kat Ung who posted a 16-5 record last season. Opponents batted only .180 against Ung who also excelled at the plate, batting .432 for Coach Jennifer Dessert-McBride’s Sea Hawks.
