Richstone Family Center Pier to Pier Walkathon (and Musicthon)

The 28th Annual Richstone Family Center Pier to Pier Walkathon might have added “musicthon”  to its title Saturday morning. The hundreds of walkers were sent off at the Manhattan Beach pier by the rock cover band Once More. As the rock tunes receded near the border between Manhattan and Hermosa, walkers were welcome by the upbeat ukulele sounds of singer/song writer Nick Shattuck, whose support for Richstone is an outgrowth of his day job as Hermosa’s Youth Programs Coordinator. Just across the border walkers were cheered on by the Dixieland sounds of the Hyperion Outfall Serenaders. The “Official Band of the City of Hermosa Beach” sets up each year on The Strand house porch of Dorothy and Bob Courtney. Dorothy was Richstone’s longtime executive director. Approaching the turnaround at the Hermosa pier, walkers sped up to the beat of the White Stripes “Seven Nation Army” and Lipps Inc’s “Funky Town.” It wasn’t another cover band performing. It was the 30-piece, Parras Middle School big band following the beat of drummer Matthew Lucas and the direction of band instructor Greg Erskine.

The walk raised over $100,000 for the Richstone, which offers a wide range family and childrens services throughout the South Bay.
