Utilizing its size and depth, the Mira Costa boys volleyball team flexed its muscle Thursday evening with an impressive sweep at Redondo, demonstrating the skills that have the Mustangs ranked third in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll.
The Mustang’s 25-16, 25-17, 25-18 win over their rival was led by Ryan Kaseff’s 10 kills. Riley Mallon had nine kills, Keith Waddell recorded seven kills and six digs, Karl Acres posted six blocks, Brooks Varni added six digs and setter Jackson Carr contributed 31 assists and five digs.
Mira Costa continues to be without the services of senior outside hitter Chris Orenic who is recovering from broken wrist that required surgery at the start of the season. He is expected to return in late April.
Coach Mike Ninnis’ squad will travel to Newport Harbor for a 6 p.m. match on Tuesday before returning to Bay League action Thursday with a 3:15 p.m. home match against Peninsula.

Mira Costa’s annual Alumni Game will be held Friday, March 23 at 7 p.m.
For the young Redondo team which has three sophomore and two juniors in its lineup, the loss to Mira Costa was just one more step toward maturity.
“We’re a very young team,” Redondo Head Coach Duncan Avery said. “But the experience gained playing in every big match will help the players when they face the same situation in future matches and in the playoffs.”
Sophomore standout Louis Richard led Redondo with 16 kills, Vinny Pizutti added five kills and seven digs and Tyler Bird recorded eight digs.
The Sea Hawks continue Bay League play Tuesday hosting Peninsula and Thursday at West. Both matches are scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
