Track and field teams ready for Bay League championship runs

The South Bay Championships and Mt. SAC relays provided quality competition last weekend as Mira Costa and Redondo’s boys and girls track and field teams make their runs for Bay League championships.

Redondo has a key dual meet at Palos Verdes on Thursday while Mira Costa is hosting Inglewood and Morningside. Redondo hosts rival Mira Costa Wednesday, Apr. 29.

Redondo’s girls dominated the South Bay Championship held Saturday at West Torrance recording 128 points to defeat Culver City (66) and South Torrance (57). Mira Costa placed seventh with 34.78 points.

The Sea Hawks began Saturday’s competition placing first and second in the 1600. Nicole Pederson crossed the finish line first with a time of 5 minutes, 7.44 seconds to outdistance teammate Thalia Silva (5:13.78).

Redondo also held the top two spots in the long jump with  Tairyn Montgomery (16-06) and Akaylah Hill (16-04.5) turning in strong showings.

The Sea Hawks also received first-place performances from Pierson Wodzynski (300 hurdles, 49.15), Ashley Wells (discus, 116-01), Kaitlin Heri (pole vault, 11-07) and their 4×100 relay team.

Helping Redondo’s cause with second-place finishes were Kennedy Hardemion (400, 1:01.19) and Trinity Leonard (800, 2:18.75). Anastasia Chiodo finished third in the 100 (12.44) and Hill placed third in the triple jump (33-01).

Mira Costa was led by Avery Ward, who placed second in the 3200 (11:17.07), and Yasmine Al-Uqdah who was runner-up in the high jump (5-00).

Mira Costa captured the boys team title at the South Bay Championships with 80.5 points besting West Torrance (67.16) and Redondo (58).

Mustang distance standout Caleb Llorin won the 1600 with a time of 9:36.99, Mac Power placed second in the 400 (50.69), Juwan Johnson was runner-up in the shot put (43:04), Peter Yaskowitz finished second in the high jump (5-08) and Michael Yaskowitz placed third in the 800 (2:01.37).

Redondo was led by first-place finishes by Christopher Odanaka (shot put, 44-07) and Tate Curran (pole vault, 15-00). The Sea Hawks placed third in the 4×400 relay (3:27.63) and Luke Stevens finished third in the 1600 (4:28.15).

At last weekend’s Mt SAC Relays, Redondo was led by Sergio Rodriguez, who won the boys 800 seeded race with a time of 1:54.19. Teammate Ethan Comeaux placed fifth (1:56.05).

Zuri Henderson finished fourth in the girls 400 (56.38) and the Sea Hawk’s 4×800 relay team of Henderson, Amber Gore, Breya Wynne and Trinity Leonard placed fifth with a time of 9:24.22.

Mira Costa’s girls relay teams had two third-place finishes. Jordan Dorsey, Myan Elrington, Shante Robinson and Jayla Herron finished third in the 4×200 Invitational Section 1 race (1:43.21). Emily Jones, Elrington, Ellie Koncki and Robinson teamed in partnered in the 4×400 (3:56.48).
