Palos Verdes High running coach and 1988 Olympian Jeff Atkinson is hoping to make foot travel more comfortable this holiday season with his Shaggo Grom Skateboard.

Atkinson launched a KickStarter.com campaign last week with a goal of $15,000 to manufacture and ship 600 Shaggo Groms this holiday season. On Monday, he had surpassed the halfway mark with $8,385 pledged from 78 backers.

“Our plush shag, integrated into the deck, actually reduces vibration and road noise, increases comfort, and delivers a velvety smooth ride,” Atkinson writes on his KickStarter site.

Atkinson made his first shag carpet skateboard when he was a kid. A few years go he made one for his own son. Demand for the boards from neighborhood kids prompted the Manhattan Beach resident to begin custom building the boards.

For a $125 pledge, Atkinson promises a board by the holidays, if the pledge goal is met.
