For years, restaurants came and went at 229 Manhattan Beach Blvd., a curious occurrence given its prime location two blocks from the pier and a stone’s throw from some of the most successful eateries in the Beach Cities. But from the moment the brothers Simms arrived three years ago, it was apparent Simmzy’s would be different. Mike and Chris Simms, who come from the famed restaurant family that operates the legendary Kettle a half-block away and Mimi’s Café in LA, tore down the front wall, created a casual but impeccably well-sourced “artisanal” pub menu, and – here may be the key – brought 24 rotating taps of craft beer to downtown Manhattan Beach. The moral of the story is that good beer always prevails. Simmzy’s general manager Micah Schiesel has been the man behind the brew selection, and he has managed to procure some of the finest beers in the land. A recent day’s selection included such hard-to-find treasurers as Dogfish Tahenket, Alaskan Barley Wine, and the Heretic Evil Cousin IPA. Schielsel also steadfastly supports such local rising stars as the Strand Brewery’s 24th Street Pale Ale. His hand-picked staff helps customers match their beers with their plates and their palates.
“Our staff is really, really good,” Scheisel said. “They carry our philosophy. We try to expand people’s palate a little bit.”
