Mira Costa duo among local athletes earning All-CIF honors

Mira Costa setter Britt Bommer used finesse and a powerful swing to help the Mustangs reach the CIF-SS Division 1 semifinals for the first time since 2009. Bommer will attend Northwestern in the fall. Photo

For the first time in a decade, Redondo did not have a player selected to the All-CIF team but Mira Costa had two named to the Division 1 squad, senior setter Britt Bommer and senior outside hitter Alexa Underwood.

Bommer, who will take her talents to Northwestern in the fall, used finesse as a setter but still maintained a powerful swing at the net, She was a strong senior leader who is proud to say she left everything on the court.

“Making the All-CIF team is an incredible honor and I am humbled by the honor,” Bommer said. “I thank everyone who supported me and our team.  It wasn’t just one person that made the team better; everyone contributed to the season and we all worked our hardest to get as far as we could.

“Being a senior, I wanted to foster and inspire the love of the game that the younger girls brought, whether they were on varsity, JV or frosh, or even still in middle school coming to our games. The love of the game and the camaraderie we find are some of the things that make it all worth it. The titles and championships may come, and they may not, but I wouldn’t have changed a thing this past year.”

It has been one of my goals since I joined the varsity program at Costa and it’s an amazing feeling to know my hard work paid off,” Underwood said. “I couldn’t have done it without the support of my amazing team, coaches, and family. I’m really proud that I get to represent my school one last time with this award. I also can’t wait to come back and watch my sister and the rest of my teammates finish what we started.”
