Hudson Ritchie

Age: 16

Sponsors: MS Surfboards, Hippytree, Sin Min Lip Balm, Bay Cities Surf Club

DZ: What do you eat in the morning to fire you up to go surf?

I love waking up to my mom cooking eggs, bacon, and English muffins and stuff. I also love going down the street to my grandmas. She makes sure I don’t leave with a empty stomach.

IMG_4623DZ: Where do you surf locally? Where is your favorite place to surf and why?

I love surfing the Avenues right down the street from my house. It doesn’t get good too often but when it does I’ll be out there until the wind or the tide kills it.

DZ: What are the beats that motive you to surf?

Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Hendrix, it gets me going in the morning and gets me pumped to beat Dave Schaefer. When Mike Siorida is in the comp I have to listen to Metallica so I can hang heels like him.

DZ: What are your favorite maneuvers on a surfboard?

I love noseriding. It’s the best feeling in the world. But, lately I’ve been trying to get on my rail game on a longboard.  Noseriding gets boring at times and there is nothing harder than putting a 9’4 longboard on rail. I like a challenge.

DZ: Memorable world travels?

I just had an amazing trip to Scotland with my sister Sophia and my Grandma for about a month. My grandma is from there. I call her the queen of Scotland.  I must have had 20 rounds of golf and some of those rounds were at St Andrews and Glen Eagles. I went to the 2014 Ryder cup while I was there and witnessed some great golf. My sister and I also went to Amsterdam for a weekend. It was a blast. There’s nothing like spending family time walking down the red light district.

DZ: What happened in OZ two months ago?

I went to Noosa Heads, Australia for the 2014 and 2015 Noosa festival. Last year I placed 6th in the under 18 division and 13th in the open men division. I had such a blast, my Mom and I decided to go again this year. It was flat for 3 days and after seeing Malibu pumping on my phone I was losing my mind. But then a cyclone hit and we scored shoulder high waves. Surfing pumping Noosa with five guys out is insane. I ended up doing really well and placing second in the under 18 division. While I was there I picked up a new sponsor, Noosa Shaper Mitch Surman of MS Surfboards. He showed me around and we scored some epic waves. I plan to go next year for a little longer and travel a bit and see more of Australia.

DZ: What’s your favorite local restaurant?

My favorite place to eat around town is Los Calballitos. It’s a little taco stand inside the Redondo Food Mart on Sapphire Street and Catalina Ave. It has the Best bean and cheese burritos of all time! I highly recommend it.

DZ: What is favorite car? What are you driving now?

I like the Land Rover Defender model. You don’t see many of them around here but they are very popular in other parts of the world like Aus.  Currently, my car is the love of my life. I drive a 1966 Toyota FJ45 LV Land cruiser. It makes me feel like I’m on a safari in the middle of LA.

DZ: Who are your favorite surfers?

Some favorite surfers of my mine would be Robin Kegal, Ellis Ericson, Al Knost, Kyle Beatty, Mike Siordia, and Edfactor. I am not sure about the last one, but he got me to do this Q&A so I better mention his name in here somewhere..

DZ: Who are you crushing on right now?

Haha, I’m not going to say because that’s weird if she reads it on here!!

DZ: What’s your GPA? and do you get grounded for bad grades?

I think I have a 3.1 or something around that. My parents aren’t too hard on my with my grades but they make sure I know to keep them up.

15. Who are your heroes?

Some of my heros are Jimi Hendrix, duane allman, Ernest Thomas (Buttons), Mike Purpus, and Thomas Ritchie ( my dad.)
