Arthur Sylvester author event

UC Santa Barbara geologist Arthur Sylvester and illustrator Elizabeth O’Black Gans explored mountains, deserts, and coastlines of Southern California. Hermosa Movies on the Beach

“Raiders of the Lost Ark” opens the Hermosa Beach Movies on the Beach series, which will continue each Saturday at 7:30 p.m. through August 27.

 

Surf and Swim Injury Prevention and Treatment

The Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic and the Patty Brown Physical Therapy Associates are hosting a free surf and swim injury prevention and treatment workshop. 3 – 5 p.m. at the Mira Costa High School Small Theatre, 1401 Artesia Blvd, Manhattan Beach. The El Segundo Rotary Club presents Disney’s “Zootopia” at its 19th Annual Movie-in-the-Park. Gates open 4 p.m. Movie starts at dusk. $4  (kids 2 and under are free). Bring blankets and beach chair, but no high-back chairs please. Beer, wine, tacos, pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs, popcorn and more. Manhattan library book sale

The Friends of the Manhattan Beach Library’s used book sale is 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the  Manhattan Beach Library, community room. Chevron Manhattan Grand Prix

The Chevron Manhattan Beach Grand Prix celebrates 55 Years of Racing. The nation’s second-oldest, one day bicycle race features nine races catering to all levels of cyclists. New this year will be a 50 minute Junior race for 15 -1 8 year olds at 10:15 a.m., with a $1,500 purse paying 10 deep. The fan favorite kids’ races for children between the ages of two and 12, will be held at noon, followed by the Women’s Pro 1-3 race at 1 p.m., which will be started by local Assemblyman David Hadley. The last race of the day will be the Men’s Pro 1-2 race at 2 p.m.  Riding either a bicycle or a tricycle, kids compete for various medals and each participant receives an official race number, t-shirt, medal and goodie bag. Adult cyclists take on the challenging course in an effort to win a portion of the $21,500 in prize money the coveted Grand Prix winners’ jerseys. For more information visit MBGP.com.

A lifesaving event

USLA National Lifeguard Championships.

The event features individual and team events including swimming, running, surf boat rowing, and surf ski and board paddling. The event draws over 1,000 lifeguards, former lifeguards, and junior lifeguards from around the nation. The Championships showcase the lifesaving skills that lifeguards must possess to maintain public safety and prevent drowning and injuries on our nation’s beaches. Free. Wed. – Sat. 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Hermosa Beach Pier.
