The Environmental Services Center of the South Bay Cities Council of Governments presents a free, hands-on workshop to teach you how to create and maintain an ocean-friendly garden at a ground-breaking ceremony of the new Carson Community Center’s demonstration garden, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., with instructions by the G3LA and Surfrider Foundation. Firefighters Catalina Swim
Support the Catalina Swim Challenge and Extinguish Pediatric Cancer – One Stroke at a Time! by joining the Long Beach Fire Dept and Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach for the “Relay and Raise, Catalina Swim Challenge.” Firefighters will hold a swimming relay race from the shores of Catalina Island to Long Beach. It will take 42,487 strokes to swim the 22 miles between Catalina Island and Long Beach and the LBFD is asking the community to donate for each stroke they make; only you can help them make it to shore! Surviving Pediatric Cancer
The 2013 Regional Survivorship Pediatric Cancer Conference at Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach begins at 8 a.m. Important pediatric cancer-related topics for patients, families and health care professionals such as keeping bones healthy after childhood cancer, hormones after childhood cancer and taking care of yourself after cancer will be discussed. Lyme Disease fundraiser/Scavenger Hunt!
The Friends of Renee Fundraising Committee to raise awareness about Lyme disease and funds for a Hermosa Beach sick friend’s medical bills not covered by health insurance. Note 1) As many as 400,000 new infections annually in the US; you can be infected by Lyme disease while hiking, golfing, sitting in your back yard, or even sleeping in a motel bed! 2) South Bay residents need to learn how to avoid contracting Lyme, as well as how to properly test and treat it. The Friends of Renee will have several “learning moments” built into today’s fundraiser event, from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., starting at 15th St. and Strand, with a 1st annual Bar & Beach Scavenger Hunt!
Form a team of up to 6 friends and scour the beach, pier, and bars for clues to earn the most points to win prizes. Prize packages are worth $1500, $1000, and $500! (Minimum of 4 players per team, and we’ll put together individuals who want to be on a co-ed team of 6. Must be 21 years or older to participate.) $30 per participant.
