South Bay High School Surf League celebrates 20 years

The South Bay Surf League honored its most outstanding surfers from its first 20 years during its 20th anniversary celebration on Saturday at the Riviera Mexican Bar and Grill in Redondo Beach.

The event was hosted by John Joseph, the league’s director for the past 15 years.

Recognized for founding the league in 1993 were former Mira Costa coach Elroy Lang, former Redondo coach Les Gongelliere and parents Tricia Hopper, Carolyn Kintz and Rick Page.

The surfers recognized for outstanding contest performances for their schools were:

Mira Costa: John Balk, Brent Bowen, Chris Browman, Wyatt Boyd, Payne English, Tony Gonella, Maddie Hawks, John Smart, Mike Siordia, Dane Zaun and Kelly Zaun.

Redondo Union: Connor Beaty, TrevorEllis,ChadElliot, Jamie Meistrell, Jex McCartney, Dillon Thomas and Sean Walker.

Peninsula High: Holly Beck, Chris Bredesen Jr., Chris Del Moro, Alex Gray, Ted Travers, Matt Kelly, Kenny Nagasawa and Kevin Piper.

Palos Verdes: Derek Daigneault, Kyle Jax and Ford Timberlake.

South: Natalie Anvizino, Doug Di Santi, Johnny Joseph Jr., Hagen Kelly, Ashley Kelsey, Carrie Kintz, Shawn O’Brien, Lisa Tuttle and Kelly Moore.

Bishop Montgomery: Jon Scully and Bobby Kithcart.

El Segundo: Alex Abad, Josh Gilberts, Eddie Lester and Kent Nayishi.

San Pedro: Tony Adams, Jeremy Nunez and Brett Reinhart.

Coaches recognized were Peninsula’s Chris Bredesen Sr., and Rick Travers, Mira Costa’s Leroy Lang, Tracy Geller and Joe Lederer and Redondo’s Les Congelliere.

Also recognized were judges John Grannis, Jani Lang, Dickie O’Reilly and Mike Purpus and newspaper writers, photographers and videographers Marty Tueling, Dave Gregerson, Kevin Codyand Mike Purpus. ER
