South Bay registers first confirmed COVID-19 death; confirmed cases jump to 79 locally, 799 in Los Angeles County

The South Bay has just experienced its first COVID-19 related death, according to data released Wednesday by the Los Angeles County Public Health Department. The County confirmed 138 new COVID-19 cases and three more deaths, bringing the countywide total to 799 cases and 13 deaths. Included in those numbers were 18 new cases in the South Bay, bringing the total locally to 79. cases.
Public Health director Dr. Barbara Ferrer said that the three deaths confirmed on Wednesday were all over 65 years old and had underlying health issues.

“We talk about numbers, but these aren’t numbers,” Ferrer said. “These are people’s lives.”

Manhattan Beach saw a big jump, from 11 to 17 confirmed COVID-19 cases between Tuesday and Wednesday. Carson, Torrance, and Lomita each have nine cases, Hawthore 8, San Pedro 4, El Segundo 2, and both Gardena and Lawndale a case each.

Ferrer continued to implore that people adhere to social distancing orders.

“Our hearts go out to each and every family affected by the unfortunate deaths and serious illness associated with COVID-19,” Ferrer said.“Please help us reduce the number of people with serious illness by doing your part. Social distancing is hard – so take advantage of some of the activities offered by our County departments like virtual workouts, e-books and virtual story hours for kids through the Library, virtual museum tours by Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and services from the Department of Mental Health for those who may being feeling stressed, depressed or anxious during this difficult time.”
