Peninsula High School’s Erika Woo won the girls’ varsity pole vault last Friday night at Mira Costa’s 2013 Bay League Finals by an easy nine inches, beating Redondo Union’s Katie Parkinson and three other girls with a jump of 10-feet 9-inches. Woo attempted 11-feet 1-inch but was unsuccessful. Parkinson, Delaney Kerkoff, Sarah Curran and Megan Burn all reached 10-feet before knocking the pole off the standards. Redondo Union’s Emma Parkinson and Cailin McMartin both reached 9-feet 6-inches.

“Pole vaulting has become one of our highlight sports at Redondo and these girls are doing a wonderful job,” Redondo Union pole vaulting Coach David Dill said. “They’re trying to do a very difficult event, and I’m proud of them.”

Mira Costa Boys Sean Griffin won the boys event with a 15-feet jump and fellow Mira Costa teammate Reed Scale hit 14-feet. Redondo Union junior Ryan Keliher reached 13-feet 6-inches.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity these kids have to contribute to the overall success of the team,” said Dill. “It’s really cool. You’re kind of out in the corner and don’t get a lot of attention with pole vault and the accomplishments they make are tremendous.”ER
