Redondo Beach’s London Chow was a double winner at the AAU Junior Olympics held recently in New Orleans. Chow was given the Joel Ferrell Award for Outstanding Achievement after she teamed with Susannah Muno, of Hermosa Beach, to win the gold medal in the beach volleyball 16U division.
But the 5-foot-6 Chow wasn’t done yet. She won the power-lifting portion of the tournament, bench pressing 37 kilos (82 pounds).
Chow is a junior transfer fromPalm Springswho will play for Tommy Chaffins and the Sea Hawks this fall. Muno attends Notre Dame Academy.
Mira Costa’s Maddy Klineman and Redondo’s Tiffany Morales are two of 646 players named to this season’s Watch List for the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s (AVCA) Under Armour Girls’ High School All-America team.
Klineman, a 6’1” outside hitter, and Morales, a 5’9” libero, were teammates on the Mizuno Long Beach team.
Bay League rival Palos Verdes had two players – setter Kelly Johnson and libero Kenedy McGrath – named to the list.
In November, the AVCA will name 48 student-athletes as an Under Armour All-American, with 24 players being selected to both a First-Team and Second-Team. Now attending the University of Nebraska, Redondo’s Lara Dykstra was named to the 2010-11 second team.
At the age of 15 with only two seasons of racing experience under his belt, Diego Binatena has been selected by USA Cycling to attend the 15/16 European Race Camp in Belgium, which is a developmental camp designed to provide high-level European race experience for our country’s best bike racers. The camp includes several one-day race events along with a four-day stage race. Binatena will be racing against the best 15- and 16- year-old cyclists inEurope.
The purpose of the European Race Camp, according to USA Cycling officials, is to give young cyclists an opportunity to experience high-level international competition in a supportive team atmosphere in advance of their participation in such top tier events as the junior world championships. Only six cyclists from around the country are selected to participate in the prestigious program.
Hermosa Beach resident D.J. White was named to Volleyball Magazine’s High School All-American first team. The 6-foot-5 outside hitter is a 2011 graduate of Mira Costa High School and will play at Harvard in the fall.
White led to Mustangs to a 33-2 record in the spring season earning All-CIF southern Section first team honors. He played his club ball with Manhattan Beach Surf and was selected to the U.S. Boys Youth National Team.
Playing for the Mizuno Long Beach 16 Rockstar team, Mira Costa’s Gracie Chavers and Gabi Rosenfeld and Redondo’s Sade Mendez won gold medals at the USA Volleyball Junior Olympics inAtlanta. The team was coached by JP Calderon, Sabrina Hernandez and Tracy Allen. Joy Fuerbringer, of Redondo Beach, is the club director.
Former Chivas USA head coach Bob Bradley, of Manhattan Beach, is one of three finalists for the head coaching position of Egypt’s national soccer team. Bradley was recently fired as head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team after posting a 43-25-12 record in his five years at the helm. His teams won the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup, finished second in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, won their World Cup qualifying group and advanced to the Round of 16 of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
