Spotlight on Culture: The Pennyroyals bring back history, The Suffragette Musical
The Pennyroyal Players are a group of approximately ten women who presented the “Suffragette Musical: From Battles to Ballots.” The musical was a tribute to twenty-seven women who dared to fight for their rights, starting in 1591 and extending to 1920 in Tennessee, where the Suffragette fight culminated with the ratification of the 19th Amendment. The fast-paced musical portrays the battles that were fought for freedom and equality, and highlights the struggles and the victories that these heroic women faced. Anne Destabelle with the support of her husband, Ray, is the founder and the executive director of the group. Having begun twenty-one years ago, the group has grown and expanded its repertoire to nine productions and over 20,000 performances. They have donated $195,000 to different charities that they support.
