Matt “Chewy” Chernega’s 2002 Chevy Silverado is built just as much for a surf safari as a desert romp. The modifications are extensive giving the truck the appearance of the batmobile.

“I bought the truck in 2010 in pretty much stock condition” Chernega said. “I’ve been fabricating all my life and building trucks since I was 19, so for 13 years.”IMG_1189Through his fabrication company, Nexus Metalworks, which he started five years ago, he fabricated all the mods himself. The mods include: a Nexus Long Travel Suspension kits with 20 inch front wheel travel, Fiberwerx one piece race clip and bedsides, Howel power steering upgrades, Fox shocks, Walker Evans Racing rims, BFG 39” project tires, a Nexus Metalwork Engine Cage, custom fabricated Nexus Metalwork front and rear bumpers, and to tie everything together, a vinyl matte black wrap. “My first modified truck was my high school ride, a 1996 orange tacoma,” he said. “I taught myself on that truck  and it ended up being a full blown race truck, but that’s a different story.”

Around the South Bay, if a trucks been raised and modified there’s a good chance it’s “Chewy’s” handywork.IMG_1206“I do a lot of work for the everyday dude who just wants a good looking truck,” he said. “I’m currently in the process of building a full blown Toyota Tundra top of the line race truck with a four cage suspension that’s not going to be street legal.” IMG_1234Besides auto customization, Chernega’s company handles general fabrication: laser cutting, work on homes, awnings, art pieces, etc. IMG_1238

On the weekends and vacation, Chernega likes to take it to his Silverado on the desert terrains of Glamis and Barstow and the sandy beaches of Pismo.

“I love to surf,” he said. “Pismo brings both my passions together.” DZ
