On August 22 surfers from all over Southern California came to pay their respects to Griff Houston, who passed away on June 27.
Houston was a lifelong resident of Hermosa Beach and a founding member of the Bay Cities Surf Club, one of the original surfing clubs of the 1960s.
“He started surfing in 1958,” said his best friend, Pat Cahill. “He surfed until he passed away.” no images were found
On the beach life long friends gathered to paddle out his ashes to sea.
“As his ashes were poured into the sea and the fireboat sprayed up a fountain of seawater, a large flock of seagulls took off from the water as we cried, ‘We love you Griff,” said Cahill. “It was an awesome orchestration.” no images were found
After festivities included a party just down the road in Manhattan Beach with a “great little Calypso band” jamming, Cahill said. Houston was known for playing a mean ukulele and loved music.
“I saw some friends I hadn’t seen in 35 years,” Cahill said. “People got up and talked about this man Griff, who they all loved. He was a kind and gentle friend to many, and he was my best friend.” ER
