Beach Cities Sports: Beach tennis, running, volleyball and more

Volleyball: Surfside Volleyball Club will be holding tryouts for girls Thursday, Oct. 9 from 5-6:30 p.m. for 12 & unders and 7-8:45 p.m. for 13s and 14s at Manhattan Beach Middle School. A memorial volleyball tournament will be held for Clint Clausen, owner of Four Daughters Kitchen in Manhattan Beach who passed away recently. The co-ed fours tournament will take place Saturday, Oct. 11 at 8:30 a.m. at the Marine Street courts in Manhattan Beach. All proceeds will be going to the 529 education funds for Clausen’s four daughters. Funding of the tournament is through sponsorships and donations and organizers are looking to local businesses for sponsorships in denominations of $250 and higher, donations to auction at the event, or items to pass out to participants in “goodie bag” fashion. Beach Tennis: The Hermosa Beach Open with a purse of $10,000 will be held Friday through Sunday, Sept 26-28 at 14th Street and The Strand. Local professional players Marty Salokas and Mark Bonfigli have raised funds to host the event that includes many local sponsors along with Subaru, dealer,com and Sexy Beach Tennis. Competition includes Mens’ and Women’s Pro divisions and a Men’s and Women’s Amateur Doubles tournament. “Many of our local players travel the world to play the sport and having a big $10,000 event puts us on the map,” Salokas said.  For more information, visit hermosabeachopen.net.

Cycling:  The Dave Richardson Race Series, an annual event sponsored by the Redondo Beach-based South Bay Wheelmen, will hold the second of 10 races on Sunday, Sept 21 at 8:30 a.m. The criterium race will take lace at Crenshaw/Ball Corp. in Torrance. The races are a mix of criteriums, road races, and time trials. Only South Bay Wheelmen members can race and riders must have a United States Cycling Federation license to participate. Football: El Camino College will be playing its home games this season at Redondo Union High School while construction of its new football stadium takes place. The Warriors play four National Central Conference home games against Citrus (Sept. 27), Cerritos (Oct. 11), Harbor (Oct. 25) and Mt. San Antonio (Nov. 8). All home games kick off at 4 p.m.

Triathlon: Registration is open for the Day at the Beach Triathlon to be held at 7 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 12 in Hermosa Beach. The event includes a ¼ mile ocean swim, 10 mile bike and 3 mile run. A 1-hour swim clinic will be offered on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 8 a.m. at 10th Street in Hermosa Beach. Fees are $115 (individual) and $180 (relay). Add $10 after Aug. 31. Running: The 37th Annual Manhattan Beach 10K will take place Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 a.m. with approximately 4,000 participants will run through downtown and residential streets of the city, finishing at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Entry fees are $35 for adults, $30 for youth under 15 years. Registration is available at Village Runner, 1840 Sepulveda, Manhattan Beach, or online at active.com.

Registration on ongoing for the annual GI Bootcamp Fall Pier 2 Pier Run/Walk in the sand from the Hermosa Beach Pier to the Manhattan Beach Pier. The event takes place Saturday, Nov. 8 at 7 a.m. Participants receive T-shirts, goodie bags and raffle prizes. First and second place male and female runners receive gift certificates to Village Runner stores. Beat the fastest time (male – 18:32, female – 22:42) and win $100. Cost is $25 per runner (add $10 after Sept. 19). Team/family discounts available. Proceeds benefit Trinity Basketball and Education along with Grandparents as Parents.
