A swell week for Super Bowl

Welcome February. What I consider our last real month of winter surf should start off with some decent waves and remain in the moderate zone all the way through Super Bowl Sunday.

Thursday: A new, long interval swell will build through the day. Things will start off slow for the morning session, but scout sets should start to show later and fill in through the day.

This energy has quite a bit of West in it, coming in at a 275-290 degree angle, and should put the best West facing breaks into the well overhead zone by sundown.

Conditions will continue to be great into the early afternoon with breezes out of the NE/NNE at 5 to 9 m.p.h. Look for West winds to kick up to 8 to 10 m.p.h. late and continue until sundown. We’ll see a high air temp of 70 degrees.

Friday: It should be all systems go. I can’t promise you shape, but that long interval, NW energy will put the top West facing breaks in the overhead to a few feet overhead range. The tide cycle will continue to improve for the dawn patrollers as we wind our way into the weekend.

The conditions look excellent again with more offshore winds out of the NE/NNE at 5 to 9 m.p.h. into the early afternoon and West winds at 6 to 10 m.p.h. until the sun sets. We’ll see a high air temp of 70 degrees.

Saturday: We’ll still have plenty of surf out of the NW with the better spots remaining in the overhead zone. We’ll also see another band of NW swell fill in right on the heels of its predecessor. This one will be a hair smaller, but come in from a similarly Westerly angle.

The conditions should be pretty good, but the models are putting a little more North in the wind direction for some areas. Most spots though, will blow predominately out of the NE/NNE at 5 to 9 m.p.h. Look for West winds to get up to 8 to 12 m.p.h. and continue until dark. We’ll see a high air temp of 70 degrees.

Jimmy Young and Greg Browning’s annual Bare Back contest will be held this morning at the Hermosa Pier.

Super Steeler Sunday: Our swell will taper off through the day. The morning session should be good, though, with favorable tides and conditions. The West facing breaks will, once again, pack the most punch, so get out there and have fun. Be sure to get back in time to watch Aaron Rodgers get all his teeth knocked out and the Packers reduced to cheese whiz.

The conditions are looking, perfect for the morning with breezes out of the NE/NNE at 5 to 8 m.p.h. until around 1 p.m. Look for West winds to stay at a fairly mild 4 to 8 m.p.h. out of the SW until sundown. We’ll see a high air temp of 69 degrees.

The current water temps are as follows: South Bay 60 degrees, Newport 57, Huntington 58, Santa Monica 57 and Malibu 55 degrees.
